October is one of a handful of months that has two birthstones - opal and tourmaline. Tourmaline was added more recently due to it being more affordable and accessible than opal, and we have to say, we're delighted it was. While tourmaline comes in an array of colours, we adore the pink version for its stunning depth of colour.
This beautiful mineral was a particular favourite of the last Empress of China, Empress Dowager Tz’u Hsi, who ruled the country with an iron grip from the 1860s to the turn of the century. She was so obsessed with the gem, she bought vast quantities of it from a mine in San Diego, and one story recounts how she demanded her favourite pink tourmaline ring to be placed on her finger while on her death bed.
Pink tourmaline has the power to calm and to heal emotional pain and suffering. The Romans used it as an aid to relieve anxiety, stress and insomnia. Related to the heart chakra, the stone is also believed to carry the virtues of friendship, compassion and unconditional love.
In our collection, we've paired pink tourmaline with peridot and blue topaz to create two stunning necklaces that are perfect for wearing just by themselves or layering with other pieces.
